As a lead singer of the most popular British band in the punk era, the Jam, Paul Weller lead audiances from country to country. As the Jam winded down, Paul Weller started to prod into more Motown and soul. In 1983 Weller ended up in the appropriate group, Style Council. The group progressed but Weller's persistance to soul music lead him to the point in his career where he couldn't get a contract in 1990. As an independent artist, Paul Weller returned to soul music, mixing in a progressive and hippie style. Weller regained his popularity in the UK releasing several solo records. Paul Weller had his greatest success with Stanley Road entering the charts at number one and eventually selling nearly a million copies in the UK. Although Stanley Road had mixed reviews, it gained Weller the much lost ground since the Jam and put him once again in a respectable seat in the industry. Paul Weller returned in the summer of 1997 with Heavy Soul, further influencing the British rock scene. He released Heliocentric in spring of 2000, claiming it was his last studio recording.
