R. E. M. the alternative rock band that are considered to be the founders of the alternative "garage" rock movement. R. E. M. an american alternative rock maga group was started in the beginning of the 1980s. They led the shift away from punk and hardcore back to guitar pop, but with a new alternative spin.
This band has enjoyed success for a number of years. But it was not always this way. There success did not come till 1987 with the album Document and the single It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine).
