Tracy Chapman released her self titled debut album in 1988 to positive reviews and, buoyed by a support slot on tour with 10,000 Maniacs, an appearance at Nelson Mandela's 70th Birthday Concert and the success of single Fast Car, the album became a smash hit, going many times platinum by the end of the year and winning four Grammy Awards including Best New Artist.
