The former lead singer of the Commodores, Lionel Richie went solo in 1982, releasing his debut self-titled album to critical and commercial acclaim.

In a standout career, he has had numerous smash hit singles including: Say You, Say Me, All Night Long, Hello and Dancing on the Ceiling and was one of the biggest stars of the 1980s, along with Michael Jackson and Prince.

The Commodores were formed in the latter half of the 1970s and became one of Motown's most successful groups following the release of hit singles like Just To Be Close to You. Following's Lionel Richie's solo success in his 1981 duet with Diana Ross, Endless Love, he opted to leave the band.

e released his self-titled debut solo album in 1982, which included his first solo number one single Truly.
